Four Tips for Your Senior Session
Hey you,
I’m so glad you are here. Whether you are a senior preparing for your session or a parent trying to help your child through this process, I got you. I know that being in front of the camera can be intimidating, especially when you are alone. Plus, graduating, whether from high school or college, is a huge deal and marks a big transition in life. Photographers want your senior session to be fun and not add to the stress of everything else you have going on right now. So here are my four tips on how to get the absolute most out of your senior portrait session while also having fun.
1. Make choices that are meaningful to you.
Whether this is in the locations, outfits, or props that you choose. Make sure that the things which you are choosing to incorporate into your session matter to you and have meaning. Do you play an instrument or sport? Do you have a hobby that has been a huge part of your life? Is there an animal that has gotten you through the past several years? Think about the things that impact your life and how they can be incorporated into your session, then talk to your photographer about making it happen! These choices will ensure that every photo carries a deeper meaning for you, while also showcasing your personality and the important things that make up your life.
2. Wear what makes you confident.
Photographers oftentimes allow outfit changes. I personally allow up to three outfit changes during a senior session. My suggestion is that you have at least one formal outfit with two others that are more casual. If you play a sport some seniors like to use one of the more casual outfits to incorporate their jersey or letterman’s jacket. Just be mindful about how hard it will be to change into and out of each outfit because you don’t want changing to take up too much time. Pro tip: depending on the locations you choose, bring a large towel or blanket that you can change behind. Also, use layers to bring in dimension, create movement, add color, or turn one outfit into two different looks. Most importantly, put together looks that feel like you, showcase your personally, are comfortable, and make you feel confident!
3. Bring props!
If you already have your cap and gown for graduation or any honor cords, then bring them. If you are 21 or older a bottle of Champagne to pop is also always fun. Other props could include an instrument if you are a musician, a ball or gear if you are an athlete, or something simple that represents your favorite hobby. Small and simple props can add to the creativity of a session while showcasing who you are and this time in your life.
4. Be prepared.
Talk to your photographer before your session. The more information you can give your photographer, both about yourself and your hopes for the session, the happier they will be and the more they can help you. Make sure you know exactly when and where your session is starting, then make sure you arrive a few minutes early. Pack all your clothes and props into a bag that is easy to carry and pull things out off. You do not want to be wasting time rummaging through your car trunk. Have a plan for where and when it would be best to use each outfit and prop, your photographer can help you with this. It might feel excessive, but the more prepared you are for your senior session the smoother everything will flow and the more fun you will have.
