Six Tips for Including Your Dog in Your Photography Session

We take pictures of our dogs on our phones every single day. So why not include them in your next photography session? Taking pictures with your beloved pet gives you memories that you are going to be able to look back on and smile about for a lifetime. I love it when clients choose to incorporate their dog into a session. So here are my six tips to help you be prepared for a photography session with your special doggo!

1. Bring plenty of high value treats! Dogs are sooo susceptible to bribery and I have no qualms with milking this trait for all its worth.

2. Bring a toy… or a few. New toys will look best in pictures. However, if your dog has a favorite toy that is well loved their eye’s shine the brightest when holding their favorite one. So even if it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing your dog is going to be so happy it will all be worth it.

3. Dress your dog in his or her best. Use their nicest collar and leash for the occasion because they will be visible in most of the pictures. Also, if you want to add a little pizzas there isn’t much cuter than a doggie in a pretty bow or bowtie.

4. Make sure your dog is groomed before your session, either by you or a professional. Depending on your dog’s hair type and length it might be apparent if they haven’t been brushed or bathed in a while. Plus, no one wants to be trying to smile and snuggle a dirty or stinky dog.

Pro Tip: bring along a lint roller for yourself. Chances are hair will get everywhere and it’s the easiest way to keep your outfit hair free.

5. Bring someone along to help who isn’t going to be getting photos taken. This person is going to be able keep track of all your dog’s stuff, help me get your dog to look at the camera, and hold your dog and keep him or her occupied while not in photos.

6. Bring a bag to contain all of your dog’s stuff as well as some useful items that have not yet been mentioned. Make sure you bring water for your dog as well as a way for them to drink it. If you know you are going somewhere that your dog could possibly get wet be sure to bring a towel. Being organized makes everything run smoother and with less stress for you so grab everything you are going to need for you session and keep it in a single bag that you and your helper will be able to access easily.

I hope these six tips are helpful as you prepare your dog for your next photography session together. Remember at the end of the day a session with your pet should be filled with love and laughter. Don’t worry about everything being perfect or your dog being on his or her best behavior. These pictures are for the memories and that’s what counts. As always, if you have any questions, or want to book a session with your pet, feel free to reach out.
